Now I wanna hear a Steve Reich "Piano Phase" midi. Or perhaps a John Cage "4'33" midi.

This is rather a bombardment of sound and sight - but also quite fascinating. There's a whole scene based around this? One of the songs reminded me of a digital Suicide!

where have you been, z. von s.? chiptunes has been going for awhile. there are even documentary films on it. live performances of it are weird to see online (columbus doesn't have any performers that i am aware) because it will be a bunch of people celebrating a guy or two on stage playing music through their game boy (lsdj program) while the audience is cheering them on. more power to them, but being old enough to have played games to no applause the spectacle seemed a little odd.

odd that there were a bunch of people reacting viscerally to the lack of stage performance.
i understand quite well why no one would cheer me on playing a handheld game system.

Apparently, not being very hip to the [video] game [music]!

I can't imagine that I would have discovered this. Modern electronic music largely turns me off, and even that which appeals to me does not fall within the purview of the recent interest in Nintendo/Sega music*. My musical wanderings, I think, would not have crossed paths with this movement. (Let me state on the record that I greatly enjoy some video game music, especially that found in the early Megaman games; I just am annoyed by the hipster/indie cool-factor currently associated with it.)

Still, I am fascinated by the idea that such a thing exists, and am strangely enamored with the audio-visual experience of that website. Though I truly can't imagine a live performance, like you said. I think the "performance" would have to be done out of sight with some sort of visual experience happening on stage, like a pre-recorded video or animatronic models performing, etc. Just watching a guy hit buttons, well, that might not be too fun. Especially if that guy is wearing a tight-fitting Yoshi the Dinosaur shirt.

*This is not to suggest that Adam is interested in such recent trends, for his wonderfully endless discoveries of treasure troves of strange, interesting things appear to not be tied to any pre-existing criteria!

from what I've read of/seen in screenshots, Rockstar is a suped-up "The Biz." Somehow it is compelling to keep playing but I can't explain why. The story of it {http://www.kempa.com/2004/03/09/vinyl-data/} makes it apparent the game is a commentary on this frustrated new wave guy's dilemmas trying to succeed as a musician, chance misfortunes and otherwise. I definitely appreciate that being expressed through a funny RPG where the audiovisual aspect is nothing but text and beeps, rather than another moot song about how bad the music industry is. Besides, the song probably wouldn't have been too good anyway

No snarkiness inferred, my friend. If my response sounded defensive in response to such proposed snarkiness, then I must counter-apologize for my own miscommunication!

Back in a rather glorious, care-free time, I did play a lot of video games - and of course, when I was younger. Not so much now, although every now and then I get the inspiration. But I never really researched the games or the culture beyond playing them.
